ETHNOGRAPHIC
MUSEUM

The Ethnographic Museum of the Middle of the World was inaugurated in
August of 1982, with an agreement between the Provincial Council of
Pichincha and the Central Bank of Ecuador. This Museum as well as the
Tourist Complex is administered by the Empresa Turistica Ciudad Mitad
del Mundo.

The exhibition inside the Equatorial Monument represents the different
Ecuadorian cultures, with its clothing, customs, activities and in general
ethnic groups who have constituted the past and the present of Ecuador.
The entire exhibition is distributed on nine levels of the architectonic
structure of the monument. There are also bilingual guides, who explain
all about the Museum.

On the ground floor there are maps showing the geography, economy, human
riches and the route of the Equator Line that passes through different
countries and continents. There is also a display of Galapagos Islands,
whose flora and fauna are unique in the world.

Going up by an elevator, you get to a balcony where you can see the
ecological landscape and projects that surround the Equator Monument.

Coming down the stairs is the ethnographic exhibition of the different
ethnic groups, which are distributed by provinces, its objective is
to show that Ecuador is pluri-cultural, multiethnic and multilingual
country.
