History
of Quito |
||||
Although Quito dates back further than just 1534, any traces of prehispanic monuments have disappeared. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Indian warrior Rumiñahui burned the city in 1533 and any pre-Incan temples that might have existed were destroyed. |

Among
the city's illustrious characters, stands Atahualpa, the last emperor of
Tahuantinsuyo, who the Spanish imprisioned and executed in Cajamarca in
1533, despite the fact that his people paid for his release with the room
full of gold and silver. Along with the Spanish conquerors, also arrived the Catholic Missionaries, who played an important role during the colonization years, and continued to do so during the republican period. This fact is evident through the presence of more than 30 convent, churches, and chaples built within Quito's Historical Center. http://www.quitodigital.com/paseo/eng/historia.htm |
